Jackie's Seizures

To give a little background on this post: Jackie this past fall experienced epileptic seizures. We went to a Pediatric neurologist in SLC and started her on a medication to prevent them. We figured out that she is proned to having seizures which is different than actually being diagnosed.

Jackie this weekend experienced 5 seizures on Saturday. We are not sure why they happened or what caused them. These seizures where much longer than her previous ones back in September. They lasted 4-5 minutes with stiffness and/or limpness in her body, right leg twitching, left hand clasped tightly, smacking of lips, chewing on tongue, dilated eyes, unresponsiveness and some gulping. This was pretty scary b/c you can't do anything. After the second one occurred we took her to the ER and spent 5 hours there. While in the ER she had three more seizures. They were able to get her out of the seizures quicker with oxygen and medications. Her blood was taken, urine samples given and she had an IV. She now has been diagnosed with epileptic seizures.

Rachel (my sister) had come up for the afternoon and was with me in the ER while Troy stayed home with Marissa and Jared. The doctors ended up increasing her medications for the seizures and gave us an emergency drug (rectal drug) if she has one seizure. If she has more than one a day then we are supposed to take her to Primary Children's Hospital to be seen ASAP. The ER doc recommended us going there b/c they have the proper equipment for Peds.

Today she has been VERY cranky, lethargic and hungry. The neurology specialist told us a few weeks ago that when you increase the dose, the side effects take longer to get over. They are irritably, upset stomach, dizziness and fatigue. That explains today's "mood" and why she threw up her breakfast. I am hoping she doesn't throw up her dinner later tonight. She also has had 6-7 "loose" bowel movements with HORRIBLE gas.

We will try to go in tomorrow or Tuesday to our neurologist to help figure out the causes of the seizures and control them. Something I do speculate is, I think the seizures might be associated with her "teething". But that is my opinion.

Jackie's status:
Jackie has had torticollis since she was born. We have been working on it with physical therapy and a botox treatment to help fix her "tilt" of the head. We also did helmet therapy to fix the shape of her head due to the torticollis. Now more than a year late she has relapsed b/c of us being sick every month in the fall (she was fatigued and that doesn't help with the strength of her neck) and her not wearing her glasses. We went to our physical therapist and they recommended seeing the specialist again. Here is what we concluded:

Went to Pediatric Rehabilitation Specialist again and they agreed she is not a candidate for surgery!!!!!! She is on the fence whether or not she needs botox again. About half to 2/3rds of their patients, this is common to receive botox twice. We are going to get a second opinion about her eyes to see if the vision might be a problem with the torticollis. In about 1/4 of patients there is an underlying problem with the vision called: 4th cranial nerve palsy.

She actually has gotten better with the tilt in the last month, b/c we have been more adamant with the glasses.

Secondly Jackie is proned to small seizures and is currently on a drug to help get rid of them. We found this out in the summer after receiving the botox treatment. It is a good thing we are getting most of these medical treatments taken care of.

To keep everyone updated on Jackie's stuff she has... today she got an MRI. The neurologist at Primary Children's Hospital recommended it. She received an EEP last week in conjunction with everything. We went in early and sedated her, made sure she was asleep. After getting her all positioned correctly in the MRI machine (took 15 minutes) they started. Right after the doors shut to start the MRI Jackie held her breath and her oxygen levels dropped. The nurses ran in and immediately assisted her. It took them about 20 minutes to make sure she was fine and then I heard her babbling.

They started the procedure again with her slightly awake. One of the nurses stayed in with her to help put her back to sleep the "old" way (stroking her forehead). That did it and we got on with the MRI smoothly after that.
When it was done two hours had passed by since getting to the hospital. The Pediatrician with us said she needed to stay two hours after having the anesthesia b/c she had a reaction (the holding the breath). So we stayed till 10:45am. Wow what a morning.
NOTE: The reason for getting a MRI and EEP is because she is having small unresponsive episodes that are a concern. Like a seizure, they want to find the source of this.

Then after that I had an OB appt that I went to after dropping Jackie at home.

Little Owen came so fast that Grandma Linda and Aunt Lisa didn't even make it to the hospital in time. Brittney was supposed to be induced some time today but she called me this morning around 8:30 to let me know she was already in labor and that she was heading to the hospital. Then Brad called me when they got to the hospital around 9:30. He told me Brittney was already dialated to an eight. I left right away but by the time I got to their apartment to pick up Brittney's mom the baby was already here. Brittney didn't even get her epidural!

Mom and Baby are doing great and Lily loves her baby brother. Daddy is happy to have a son born on the day of the All Star game!
Grandma Barbara gets here tonight and then Grandpa Dan will be here next week!

Update on Troy and Jill

We had a scare on early Sunday morning. The barometric pressure dropped (along with taking Sudafed, the ok kind for pregnant ladies) and contractions continued for 3 hours. We went to the hospital so they would stop the contractions. As they were monitoring me the contractions came as close as 3-4 minutes. Luckily I had just been given my 2nd steroid shot for the babies.

They gave me trebutaline after an hour and monitored me again for another 1.5 hours. The contractions then slowly stopped. They sent me home with more medicine and the contractions are maybe every hour if I get up and do things. So I am on a bed rest. Things have subsided and I have had a cold for the past 4 days. Already having a cold and being pregnant makes it hard to sleep. I can't take very many medicines since I am taking the trebutaline.

I am hanging in there and have a good amount of help. Rachel (my sister) came over on Sunday to give me emotional and physical help. Troy has been awesome along with Barbara. Brittney is coming today with Lili so that will be a good playmate for Marissa.

I am just over 33 weeks along and they want me to last about another 3 weeks if I can. Everything is fine with me and babies, they say we look great. The steroid shots help the babies lung develop so if they were to born this early it would be ok but not as good if we can hold off a couple of weeks. The babies estimate: girl-over 4lbs and boy- 3.75lbs. We will keep you posted.

Calm Before the Storm

Well, the doctor has started some routine Non-Stress Tests, they happen twice a week. They usually start around 29/30 weeks for mothers who are pregnant with twins and if they make it that far. I sit with two little monitors on my tummy and track the heartbeats. I can either, read, watch tv, sleep or write while they monitor me for 30 minutes. Along with these twice a week visits, I still continue a regular doctor visit every-other week and ultrasounds every 3-4 weeks. So somehow they fit those in with the stress test and keep it straight.

It kind of nice I am resting each morning for at least 30 minutes and taking a nap for at least an hour in the afternoon. Then resting at night after Marissa goes to bed. Really, my body is needing all the down time. I was telling a lady in our ward, I really like this "break" because it won't be like this in 5-6 weeks.

This is definitely as I call it the "Calm Before the Storm". Troy and his mother have been awesome with changing of the diapers, helping me feed Marissa and give her baths. I couldn't do it without them. They only thing I really have going is making the Baby girl blessing outfit, which is almost done!!!

Lisa's Makeover

So for those you haven't heard...... Lisa got a makeover at our house. Here's the scoop:
We asked Lisa to babysit on Saturday night. Meanwhile, my sister Colette had a group of friends come over. Mostly girls and a couple of guys. Some of the girls wanted to do some makeovers and on some people. Lisa happened to be asked and said sure. I couldn't believe. They tamed those bushy eyebrows and put some gorgeous make-up on her. I never thought to ask Lisa if she wanted to do that. She looked great! I mean she looks good naturally too, but this was a different look. I can't believe I didn't capture any pictures. I was totally not thinking.

The Hunt for the Easter Egg Candle

Well family if you can see in one of the pictures. Kailyn and Allias are really trying hard to find all of the easter eggs. But the couldn't find the most obvious one, The Green Old Man with a booty crack, Easter Egg. Theren't weren't the only ones that passed him, Tyler was the first to basically look right at the Easter Egg and went right past him. If you click on the collage it will bring up a closer picture of the collage and you will be able to tell which picture I am talking about.

Anyway, we had a great time we stuffed ourselves full of food, dyed eggs, watched Enchanted, played the Wii, rode the gator and had a hunt for the easter eggs. Thanks Travis and Lisa for coming!

Troy and Jill's Adventures in Freezing Virginia!

Troy and I went up to Virginia to visit my brother Andy and his family. This weekend was special because he was blessing little cousin Ethan. We had a blast and went to the Natural Bridge in 30 degree weather!!! We also went swimming at the hotel (Troy and Marissa). Marissa's bathing suit was a little small (6-12 months size) b/c we didn't have anything else. Good thing it was a tankini, it just didn't fit around the stomach area. Enjoy!
